Orange Business to launch public cloud services

Summary: France’s Orange Business Services will launch public cloud services aimed at the large enterprise market, to add to its private cloud offerings. The service will be launched in western Europe and southeast Asia in April, followed by the US in October and the Middle East and Africa next year. Orange operates its own data centre in Normandy, in northern France, and leases space elsewhere. There were not a lot of details, but Orange acquired Cloudwatt, an OpenStack-based cloud provider, to enable its public cloud capabilities and this it makes sense that it would use it in this way. Orange is entering a market still dominated by AWS, with Google and Microsoft among the few scaled providers that can compete. It is difficult to see how Orange can differentiate itself in the wide market. But that is not likely to be its goal and we expect it will likely focus on serving existing customers and targeted use cases.
