Rackspace opens data centre in Germany; data protection, managed cloud focus

Summary: Rackspace opened its first data centre in continental Europe, located in Frankfurt, Germany, and its twelfth data centre globally. The decision was revealed late last year, soon after the company opened a new office in Munich. Rackspace is aiming to serve the DACH region and its strict data protection regulations, but will also be able to serve customers needing to store data in the EU. Its existing data centre in the UK may not be sufficient following Brexit. It is also looking to grow its European business beyond the UK, which accounts for the majority of European revenues. The data centre will be house Rackspace’s ‘traditional ‘services such as private cloud and bare metal, but notably, Rackspace’s own public cloud will not be hosted here. It is going to focus on third party clouds. FRA1 is a new facility located in central Frankfurt and has local experts in AWS and Azure. The data centre partner was not disclosed.
