Market context: Earlier this year, Bell Canada added the ability to resell Azure cloud infrastructure to its partnership with Microsoft after initially offering Azure ExpressRoute to enable direct private connections to the Azure cloud in 2016. Bell has also partnered with IBM BlueMix in Canada and has its own proprietary cloud options.
Partners and third party cloud/network services: Akamai has been working with telcos such as AT&T, China Unicom, Deutsche Telecom (and its T-Systems subsidiary), Korea Telecom, Orange, Swisscom and Telefonica in a variety of scenarios. In some cases, a reseller deal is in place, in others, Akamai is operating a managed CDN for the partner. For its part, Akamai has been working out how to extend its relationships with cloud providers, with cloud infrastructure being a still relatively new area of focus. Microsoft Azure is a partnership that’s maturing after over a year of ongoing development. After focusing on exposing more APIs and creating configuration templates that make its service easier to consume, Akamai executives disclosed traffic has tripled in the last three months and customer count has also accelerated. Akamai has partnered with other providers, with the most recent being IBM Bluemix.
Angle: Bell Canada has sought to augment cloud infrastructure services with the ability to ensure the performance and security of Internet delivery applications thought its partnership with Akamai. Akamai has already integrated with Bell Canada’s cloud partners, making it easier for enterprise customers to enable new services across either (or both) platforms.
