Microsoft launches HPC in Azure with Cray

Summary: Microsoft is partnering with supercomputing company Cray to provide high performance computing (HPC) on Azure. Customers will be able to run dedicated Cray systems in Azure data centres for compute-intensive applications such as AI, advanced analytics and modelling/simulation workloads. This is another step in Microsoft’s journey to penetrate strategic markets with a focused value proposition. HPC on cloud is obviously not easily found and an option that companies – and even individuals – can use to alleviate the exorbitant costs of an on-premise version. The move jives neatly with Microsoft’s August acquisition of cloud orchestration vendor Cycle Computing, which focused on HPC applications. Cray is a longstanding supercomputer vendor and the partnership is an ‘exclusive strategic alliance’, which should give Azure a point of differentiation it can take advantage of for a nice boost.
