Summary: Microsoft agreed to buy the entire output of a 180MW wind farm 60km north of Amsterdam to power its local data centre. The Windpark Wieringermeer initiative was begun a decade ago as a partnership between Vattenfall subsidiary Nuon, Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and a local collective, but construction is only now just beginning. In September this year, Vattenfall took over 32 wind turbine positions owned by the collective, which will give it a total of 82 at the wind farm, with ECN to own the remaining 17 and one to be made available for local residents. It also announced it would invest €200m to build the first 50 wind turbines that will start producing power in 2019 and ultimately provide the 180MW Microsoft has agreed to buy.
