Summary: The UK’s Graphcore recently came out of stealth with a preview of its IPU (intelligence processing unit, distinct from CPU and GPU processors) on Azure, claimed to be the world’s first IPU cloud service. Graphcore’s IPU is a new class of silicon processor that has been built from the ground up to support next-generation machine learning workloads. Microsoft is one of 15 investors in Graphcore (others include a number of VC firms as well as Dell, Samsung, BMW iVentures and Bosch) and has been working with the company for two years.
