Summary: Indonesia’s president has signalled that Microsoft wants to build a data centre in the country, saying the government will make a decision within a week to issue a simple regulation to support investment in a facility. At a Microsoft event in the Middle East, and following a meeting with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Indonesian president Widodo confirmed Microsoft wanted to invest immediately in Indonesia. This would likely mean cloud regions and Jakarta would be the first location of choice. Alibaba Cloud already has data centres in Jakarta, while AWS and Google are prepared to open cloud regions there as well. There are signs that Microsoft could be building a data centre rather than lease. There is relatively less colocation inventory in this market that could potentially accommodate hyperscale requirements. Similar chatter has surfaced around AWS’s plans. It has three AZs on the roadmap and one of them may end up being a self-build.
