Summary: Microsoft experienced a number of small-scale outages impacting different services. An ‘isolated power event’ impacted Azure for some customers in the West Central US region for four hours in the evening of March 15. Around the same time, the Xbox Live gaming service went down globally for 2.5 hours. It is likely the outage was due to high demand brought on by the increase in Internet traffic due to work at home policies resulting from the COVID-19 virus outbreak. This was also likely behind the problems affecting Microsoft Teams in Europe at the start of the March 16 working day as businesses and governments across the region encouraged as many people as possible to work remotely and schools closed. The issue returned the following day, which Microsoft attributed to a caching issue within a component of its infrastructure.
