Microsoft previews Kubernetes-enabled Azure Arc

Summary: At its Build 2020 developer conference, Microsoft previewed Azure Arc-enabled Kubernetes. The idea is to use Azure Arc to connect and configure any Kubernetes cluster across multiple data centres. As we wrote when Azure Arc was previewed in December, Microsoft is taking a different direction from AWS. Instead of wanting to own the customer’s entire infrastructure, Microsoft intends to allow the freedom to mix and match resources from multiple venues. Consequently databases, and Linux and Windows servers, can be run outside Azure using Arc, and now Kubernetes. In some sense, this is merely an evolution of Microsoft’s strategy with Azure Stack, where the thinking was to give the customer the choice between off- and on-premise. But it also shows us Microsoft’s strategic thinking as it takes on the the likes of Google Anthos and AWS Outposts for the edge.
