Summary: A couple of Morgan Stanley job postings provide insight into the company’s data centre portfolio and confirms it is an Azure customer. Morgan Stanley’s Enterprise Data Centre (EDC) unit is a global organisation with 300 employees operating 400k sqft of data centre space with over 32MW of critical power. It has an annual operating budget of over $200m. No specifics were given on the location and number of data centres, but they are a mix of owned and third party facilities. The Enterprise Technology & Services (ETS) business delivers shared technology services supporting all the company’s applications and end users, from software development through to monitoring and support for over 3k apps. Within ETS, the Public Cloud Transformation Services (PCTS) team is responsible for enabling teams to build and deploy new apps in public cloud as well as migration of existing apps. The job description is for a senior cloud architect to focus on accelerating client-facing apps onto Azure, with knowledge of Azure data services – in particular Azure SQL – a requirement. This is a good snapshot of where the enterprise is on its journey to cloud. There are still a lot of legacy implementations, different models are used and public cloud IT resources are somewhat scarce, but in demand. That gap represents potential demand for managed third party cloud services.
