Microsoft building Chicago area data centre

Summary: Microsoft will build a new campus near Chicago, on a 53-acre plot of land it acquired last year about 30 miles northwest of the city centre. It has not yet secured all the power needed but has received permission to build the first of two data centres planned for the site, a process that is expected to take about 18 months. The power currently available is only 60% of that needed for the first building, and Microsoft is in talks with local utility ComEd for an on-site substation that would require a further planning application. Chicago is another market where Microsoft is complementing its colocation leasing with self-builds.
