Summary: Microsoft’s new data centres in Sweden will feature low-carbon renewable fuel for emergency power. The backup generators will run on Evolution Diesel Plus, which incorporates ‘tall oil’, a renewable byproduct of forestry and paper production. It is made by Swedish energy company Preem. Although diesel fuel accounts for less than 1% of Microsoft’s overall emissions, that could still be a significant number given its extensive data centre footprint and the company needs to end its reliance on diesel by 2030 as it goes carbon-neutral.
