Thomson Reuters discloses data centre metrics, public cloud strategy

Summary: Thomson Reuters management revealed it had consolidated 550 data centres down to 200. The ultimate goal is to reduce that number to 18. It had racked up that number through acquisition and the merger of the two companies, and defined a data centre as any location with customer facing products or more than 50 devices. Due to the size of its operation – it runs 16k network devices, many at customer locations, and handles 400TB of data that changes every day and must be replicated – the company initially tried building its own cloud. However, it couldn’t keep up with the features offered by public cloud and now uses a combination of AWS and Azure. Management noted it did have briefings with Google Cloud Platform, but did not reveal whether it was a Google customer or whether becoming one was on the cards.
