Atmosera builds on Azure cloud; increasing scope, saving CapEx

Summary: Atmosera, a managed hosting and colocation provider based in Portland, introduced the Follow the Sun Master Data service.

Details: The service is a core part of Atmosera’s managed Azure cloud capabilities. It is building infrastructure for customers that is distributed strategically across Azure’s global footprint so that it can address issues like performance, latency, data location and compliance. By using Azure’s footprint, for example, Atmosera has been able to serve customers in Australia, without having to set up and deploy infrastructure there. It simply spins up Azure cloud infrastructure in that country and region automatically. Atmosera is also using Microsoft’s platform to enable infrastructure deployments that span not only Azure’s global footprint but on-premise and Atmosera data centres as well. This gives it maximum flexibility when it comes to building out a hybrid infrastructure deployment.

Angle: This is one of the very appealing aspects of the managed third party cloud model. By building on top of scaled clouds, service providers and hosters can more easily accommodate customers that have increasingly global needs. They can set up infrastructure deployments that optimize performance and meet various regulatory requirements without having to make large CapEx investments. This ultimately creates a wider addressable market for the provider. We look at issues like this in our report on the shift to OpEx from CapEx in service provider business models.
