Summary: Microsoft will open two data centres in South Africa in 2018 to deliver its cloud services, including Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics 365, across the continent. Microsoft counts South Africa’s Standard Bank as an Azure and Office 365 customer and claims over 500k cloud customers across Africa. The data centres will be located in Johannesburg and Cape Town and it appears that Microsoft will be building its own facilities. Microsoft now has 40 announced cloud regions globally. Neither AWS or Google have any African data centres at present, nor have they announced any plans to do so, but they surely won’t be far behind Microsoft. IBM partnered with local IT company Gijima and telco Vodacom to open a cloud data centre in Johannesburg last year.
