Microsoft wins Pentagon JEDI cloud contract

Summary: Microsoft beat out favoured AWS and won the Pentagon JEDI contract. The contract is said to be worth $10b over a ten-year period. Microsoft will provide cloud infrastructure for the Pentagon in a project that will consolidate a very large number of legacy and third party infrastructure services. Media reporting indicates this may not be all that is said and done. The contract is expected to be awarded in phases and there is the possibility that other clouds be awarded parts of the project. That would probably make a lot of sense given just how much data would be headed for a single cloud. Either way, Microsoft gets a big win and positions itself to win more government business. AWS has a large contact for cloud services with the CIA.
