Summary: Oracle Cloud launched its second cloud infrastructure region in Canada. This is a Gen 2 deployment of its cloud infrastructure platform and will be housed in a Montreal-based data centre. Oracle’s other cloud region is in Toronto. Though it has not been disclosed, Oracle Cloud appears to be housed with Vantage Data Centres in Montreal. An interesting wrinkle is the required proximity to an Azure cloud region. Because of the Microsoft and Oracle cloud interoperability partnership, there needs to be close to 1ms of latency between Oracle’s cloud and Azure’s. This would make it likely that if Oracle Cloud is housed at Vantage there is also an Azure node on this campus. This 1ms latency between Oracle and Microsoft cloud infrastructure platforms could also be provided by Vantage through its Quebec City campus where Azure is known to be housed. Oracle now has Canadian cloud infrastructure based in both Montreal and Toronto. Azure and IBM Cloud already straddle both regions, but Google and AWS only have cloud infrastructure in Montreal. Google has confirmed plans to move to Toronto, but AWS has not. All the hyperscale platforms started out serving Canadian customers in Montreal due to the significantly lower costs of operating in that province versus Ontario. Despite the cost differences, proximity to end users and networks are crucial to delivering the performance that segments like the enterprise market require (an important market for Oracle, Microsoft and IBM). For Oracle, its core customer base is centred around major metros like Toronto and Montreal and it had no choice but to build the localized infrastructure to support it. DR, compliance-sensitive and interoperable scenarios will be that much easier to build with this foundation.
