Summary: Microsoft will invest up to $1b in Greece including building three new data centres in greater Athens to create a Microsoft cloud region in the country. It is not clear when they will open but the announcement was the result of nine months of negotiations with the government. Like Microsoft’s recent announcements for Italy and Poland, the proposal for Greece includes a commitment to provide training – in this case to skill 100k people in digital technologies by 2025. Microsoft has been operating in Greece for nearly 30 years and has over 3k partners and customers. A number of companies have said they will use Azure services from the new Greece region, including Alpha Bank, National Bank of Greece, telco OTE and Public Power Corporation (DEI). Greece is currently without hyperscale cloud presence and Microsoft would be the first to land.
