Summary: Local media reports indicate Microsoft has bought land in both Iowa and Northern Virginia. Microsoft first landed in West Des Moines in 2008 and has two data centres with a third expected to open in May 2022. It has confirmed plans to build two more, with each spanning 1.8m sqft on 130-acre sites. Construction is expected to begin in 3Q21. In NoVa, Microsoft acquired a 46-acre plot in Prince William County for a reported $29m. Like its purchase of 66 acres in the summer, this appears to be land banking with no immediate plans to build.
